Midst blustery, blizzard forecasts,
Delicate snowflakes wending their way
Settle softly on snow-covered ground.
Today marks the end of calf-babyhood.
Chains on the sturdy tractor tires
Dig deeply in the snow track to the calf shed.
In orderly fashion, the farmer releases
Jumpy calves from their stalls.
He escorts each one to a waiting wagon.
Leaving the safety of their small quarters,
A sense of puzzlement shows
In the calves’ black and shining eyes.
Carefully loaded onto the trailer, they leave
Their nursery to explore more open spaces.
Discovering their new homes, calves
Skip and kick up their heels in new-found freedom.
Fences keep the young animals safe.
With more room in which to develop
Each becomes a vital part of the herd.
Boundaries are not removed, but changed.
